Cassia javanica, known as the Pink Shower, Apple Blossom or Java Cassia tree, is native to Southeast Asia, and its species name points to Java. It has been planted across the tropics, including India, as a shade and avenue tree. In flower, the branches droop under clusters of blooms that open deep pink and fade paler, so one tree carries several shades at once, and fallen petals carpet the ground below. In Thailand it is counted among the nine auspicious trees.
It is a fast-growing tree with feathery compound leaves and a broad crown. It is mostly deciduous in the cooler months, dropping its leaves briefly before the spring flush of flowers and new foliage. In India it suits large gardens, farmhouses, resorts, campuses and roadside avenues: anywhere with full sun and room for a spreading crown.

Written for India's heat, monsoon and soil. These are general guidelines; adjust to your city, soil and season, and message us if you want advice for your location.
Plant in an open, sunny spot with at least 6 hours of direct sun. In shade it grows leggy and flowers poorly.
Water deeply once or twice a week in the first year, more in peak summer. Established trees need little beyond the monsoon.
It tolerates most soils, including red and sandy soil. Avoid spots where water stands for days.
Mix compost or farmyard manure into the pit at planting, and top up each year before the monsoon. A light balanced feed in the early years speeds growth.
Remove dead, crossing and low branches after the blooms fade. Avoid heavy pruning just before the flowering season.
Dig a pit about 60 cm each way, plant at the start of the monsoon, stake the young tree and keep it 5–6 m from walls, drains and overhead wires.
Pink Shower usually flowers in spring and early summer, mostly from April to June in India, after a short leafless period in winter. Blooming can start earlier in warm regions and varies with the year's weather. Young trees generally need a few years to establish before they flower heavily. Full sun, a good winter rest and no heavy pruning are what bring on a strong display.
