Dombeya wallichii, the Pink Ball Tree or tropical hydrangea, is native to Madagascar. It is a fast-growing, broad-headed large shrub or small tree, usually 3–6 m tall in gardens, with large, soft, heart-shaped, toothed leaves. In its flowering season it hangs dense, ball-shaped clusters of pink flowers like pompoms from long stalks, and a mature plant can carry dozens at once. The flowers are sweetly fragrant and attract bees, butterflies and birds.
In India it is grown in gardens from the plains to the hills, and flowers in winter and spring when many other plants are quiet. It likes full sun, regular water and warmth, and it is tender to frost. Pruning after flowering keeps it compact and encourages a good display the next season, and it can also be grown in a large pot. The drooping pink balls make it a striking specimen beside a gate, a veranda or in a garden border.

Plant it in full sun for the best flowering. It tolerates light afternoon shade in very hot places, but flowers less in deep shade.
Water regularly, especially while young, and keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Established plants are fairly forgiving.
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil with compost, in the ground or in a large pot with drainage holes.
Feed every 4–6 weeks in the growing season with a balanced fertiliser, and add compost each year.
Prune after the flowers finish to shape the plant and keep it compact, and remove dead or crossing branches. Avoid pruning just before the flowering season.
The large leaves can tear in strong wind, so pick a sheltered spot. Protect young plants from frost where winters are cold.
In India the Pink Ball Tree usually flowers in winter and spring, roughly December or January to April, and a little later in cooler hill climates. The hanging pink balls open over several weeks and are fragrant. Plants need full sun and a hard enough trim after flowering to keep the head compact; pruning just before the season can remove the buds. Young plants may need a year or two to flower well.
