Calathea makoyana, the peacock plant, comes from the humid, shaded understory of Brazil's eastern rainforests. Its oval leaves are marked with dark feathery patterns on pale green, with burgundy undersides, and look hand-painted.
It belongs to the prayer-plant family: the leaves lift and fold at night and lower again in the morning. It is one of the few showy ornamentals considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, which makes it a favourite for homes with pets, provided you can give it the humidity it likes.

Written for India's heat, humidity and monsoon. These are general guidelines; adjust to your city, balcony and season, and message us if you want advice for your location.
Bright filtered light works best. Direct sun fades and burns the pattern, while deep shade dulls it.
Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist, and never let it dry out or sit in water.
Tap water that is hard or chlorinated causes crispy brown edges. Use filtered, RO or rainwater if you can.
Mist, use a pebble tray or group it with other plants. Dry AC air is its biggest enemy.
Use cocopeat, leaf mould and perlite with a little compost, in a pot with drainage.
Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month from spring to autumn, and none in winter.
Rarely, and the flowers are not the attraction. When it does bloom, it is usually from spring to summer, with small white or pale lilac flowers close to the base. The real show is the leaves, and the way they rise and fold each evening.
