The jade vine, Strongylodon macrobotrys, is native to the rainforests of the Philippines, where it grows beside streams and in ravines on Luzon, Mindoro and Catanduanes, and it is now rare in the wild because of habitat loss. It belongs to the pea family and is a close relative of beans and peas. Its claw-shaped flowers, 8–13 cm long, open in turquoise to jade green and hang in pendent clusters that can reach 1.5–3 m, a colour almost unknown elsewhere in the plant world. In the wild they are pollinated by bats.
It is a woody, twining, evergreen climber that can grow 18 m or more, so it needs a strong pergola, arbour or tree and plenty of room. It loves warm, humid tropical weather, which suits much of southern and coastal India, and it dislikes cold. It is slow to flower: a young plant needs several years, and the stems must be thick, about 2 cm across, before flowers appear.

Plant it in full sun or very bright light. It is a tropical rainforest climber and flowers best in warm, humid conditions.
Water regularly in the growing season, letting the top inch of soil dry slightly between waterings. Never leave the roots in standing water.
Use rich, well-drained soil with plenty of compost, in a large pot or a deep planting pit.
Feed every 2–4 weeks in the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. A feed higher in phosphorus before the flowering season encourages blooms.
This is a heavy liana. Give it a strong pergola, arbour or tree, and train the stems along it. The stems need to be about 2 cm thick before flowers appear.
Trim lightly after flowering to keep it in shape. Heavy pruning delays the next season's flowers.
In India the jade vine usually flowers in spring to early summer, roughly February to May, though timing varies with region and weather. Flowers appear only on mature vines: the stems need to be about 2 cm thick, so a young plant can take several years before it first blooms. Warm winters, full sun, regular feeding and light pruning give the best chance of flowers.

It likes warm, humid weather and dislikes cold, so it suits southern and coastal India and warm gardens. Message us with your city and we will advise.
It has a reputation for being fussy, but it is not difficult when the climate suits: warm, humid, with sun, regular water and a strong support. The main challenge is patience for the first flowers.
