Thunbergia coccinea, the scarlet clock vine, is native to the Himalayan foothills and hills of North-East India, from Kumaun through Nepal and Bhutan to Assam, and across Bangladesh, Myanmar and south-west China, at roughly 300–2,000 m. It belongs to the Acanthaceae family, which also includes the other clock vines. Its flowers hang in long chains of bright orange to scarlet tubular blooms with a yellow throat, about 5–6 cm long, set against large, velvety, toothed leaves. The colour depends on the temperature: flowers are more orange in warm weather and a deeper red in cooler conditions.
It is a vigorous, woody, twining climber that can reach several metres, so it needs a sturdy pergola, arbour or trellis where the flower chains can hang freely and be admired from below. It is uncommon in cultivation, which makes it a prized plant for collectors. It likes warmth and humidity and is sensitive to cold, so it suits most of peninsular India, with some protection from the harshest midday sun.

Give it full sun to bright light. In very hot places, a little shade from the fiercest midday sun keeps the leaves and flowers from scorching.
Water regularly so the soil stays moist but never soggy, and ease off a little in cooler months. It does not tolerate waterlogging.
Use fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of compost, in a large pot or a deep planting pit.
Feed every 3–4 weeks in the growing season with a balanced fertiliser, and add compost each year.
Train it up a strong pergola, arbour or trellis, so the flower chains hang down where you can see them from below.
Trim lightly after flowering to keep it tidy and encourage fresh growth. Avoid hard pruning just before the flowering season.
In India the scarlet clock vine usually flowers from winter to spring, roughly January to April, with some variation by region and weather. The chains of flowers hang for weeks, and the colour is more orange in warm weather and deeper red in cooler conditions. Young vines need to establish before they flower well. Sun, regular feeding and a strong support to hang from give the best display.
