Aglaonema, the Chinese evergreen, comes from the shaded rainforest floors of tropical Asia, with species found from Southeast Asia to the Philippines. The vivid red and pink varieties are cultivated hybrids, bred mostly in Thailand, and have become some of the most sought-after foliage plants in the world.
Unlike flowering plants, the colour here is in the leaves, so it looks its best all year. It copes with indoor conditions and gets by on modest care, which makes it one of the friendliest rare foliage plants for homes and offices.

Written for India's heat, humidity and monsoon. These are general guidelines; adjust to your city, balcony and season, and message us if you want advice for your location.
Bright filtered light keeps the red vivid. Low light turns it greener, and harsh direct sun scorches the leaves.
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry, roughly once a week in summer and less in winter and monsoon. Never leave it in standing water.
Use a light mix of cocopeat, garden soil, compost and perlite, in a pot with drainage holes.
Average room humidity is fine. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them glossy and free of dust.
Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month in the growing season.
Like many aroids, the sap can irritate the mouth. Keep it away from pets and children who might chew it.
It can, but flowering is not the point of this plant. A mature, healthy plant may produce a small cream spathe with a spadix, usually in summer, followed by red berries. Indoor plants flower rarely. Many growers snip the flower early to keep energy going into the colourful leaves.
