About & Origin

Where Gigantea Water Lily comes from

Blue-Violet BloomsGiant Floating PadsDay-BloomingFull SunRare in India

Nymphaea gigantea, the Giant Australian water lily, grows wild in the still freshwater lagoons and billabongs of northern and eastern Australia and southern New Guinea. It is one of the largest tropical water lilies in the world: in a big pond the pads can spread close to a metre across, and each flower can open 20 cm wide or more in shades of sky blue to violet with a bright yellow centre.

It is a tropical day-bloomer, so it suits India's heat very well. The flowers open in the morning, close in the afternoon, and each lasts three to four days. Because true giant water lilies are uncommon in Indian nurseries, this is a genuinely rare plant to find.

Care in India

How to grow Gigantea Water Lily in Indian conditions

Written for India's heat, humidity and monsoon. These are general guidelines; adjust to your city, balcony and season, and message us if you want advice for your location.

Light

Full, direct sun

Give at least 6 hours of direct sun. In shade it produces lots of leaves and few or no flowers.

Container

Go big

Use a pond or a wide tub of 100–200 litres or more. A cramped container gives small pads and fewer blooms.

Planting

Heavy loam, gravel top

Plant the tuber in a wide pot of heavy garden loam or clay, no compost or perlite (they float up). Cap with a layer of gravel.

Water

Still and clean

Keep the water 30–60 cm over the crown and top up as it evaporates. Avoid fountains and moving water, which lilies dislike.

Feeding

Aquatic fertiliser tabs

Push an aquatic fertiliser tab into the soil every 3–4 weeks in the growing season. Remove yellow leaves and spent flowers.

Mosquitoes

Add small fish

Stock the tank with mosquito-eating fish such as Gambusia or guppies so the still water does not breed mosquitoes.

Flowering Time

When does Nymphaea gigantea flower in India?

In India's warm plains, such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, it flowers for most of the year when water stays warm and the plant gets full sun, with the best display from about March to November. Flowers open in the morning and close by afternoon. A well-established tuber can send up several blooms at a time. Where winters dip below about 15°C the plant slows down and rests.

Frequently Asked

What buyers ask before ordering

Can I grow it in a small pot?

Will it survive Indian summers?

Yes. It is a tropical plant that prefers warm water. Just keep the water topped up and avoid letting it drop.

Is it good for a terrace garden?

Yes, in a big cement tank or a large tub with full sun, provided the structure can take the weight of the water.

Is this a rare plant, and is it in stock?

Yes. Gigantea Water Lily is a rare plant in India and we usually hold limited stock. Message us on WhatsApp to confirm current availability before ordering.
