Callistemon viminalis comes from eastern Australia (Queensland and New South Wales), where it grows along streams and in open woodland. 'Little John' is a compact dwarf selection: it stays around 1–1.5 m tall and wide instead of becoming a big weeping tree, with blue-green foliage and a tidy rounded shape.
Its flowers look like bright red bottle brushes, packed with nectar. In India they draw sunbirds, bees and butterflies. Because it stays small and handles heat, it works equally well in a large pot on a terrace, along a border, or as a low flowering hedge.

Written for India's heat, humidity and monsoon. These are general guidelines; adjust to your city, balcony and season, and message us if you want advice for your location.
Put it where it gets at least 6 hours of direct sun. Less sun means fewer flowers.
Start in a 45–60 cm pot with drainage holes, or plant out in open ground in a sunny spot.
Water regularly for the first few months, then deeply about once a week. It tolerates short dry spells better than constant wetness.
A loose, well-draining mix of garden soil, sand and compost works well. Slightly acidic to neutral suits it.
Use a slow-release fertiliser low in phosphorus, which Australian natives are sensitive to. Feed lightly in spring and after flowering.
Trim lightly after each flush to keep it compact and encourage new growth, which carries the next flowers.
The strongest flowering generally comes from about February to May in South India, when new growth carries bright red brushes. You can often get a second smaller flush after the rains. Full sun and a light prune after flowering are the two things that matter most. Young plants may take a season to settle before flowering well.
