Alocasia × amazonica is a hybrid, usually described as a cross between two Southeast Asian rainforest species, Alocasia longiloba and Alocasia sanderiana, developed by a US nursery around the 1950s. It is often sold as 'Alocasia Polly' and is now one of the best-known statement plants among foliage lovers.
Its leaves are dark and glossy with prominent pale veins, and it is naturally at home in warm, humid conditions, which suits much of India. It grows from a rhizome and may go semi-dormant when it is cold or dark, which is normal.

Written for India's heat, humidity and monsoon. These are general guidelines; adjust to your city, balcony and season, and message us if you want advice for your location.
Place it near a bright window or under shade-net. Direct sun burns the leaves; low light causes weak, leggy growth.
Water when the top 3–4 cm of soil is dry. Overwatering and rot are the main causes of losing an Alocasia.
Use a mix of cocopeat, perlite, orchid bark and compost, in a pot with large drainage holes.
Mist or group it with other plants. Dry air encourages spider mites and crisp edges.
Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks in the warm growing season.
In low light or cooler weather it may drop leaves and rest. Water less and it will push new leaves when warm.
It can, but rarely, and the flowers are not the attraction. A mature, well-grown plant may produce a small pale spathe with a spadix during the warmer months. Many growers remove it so the plant puts its energy into new leaves. The leaves are the reason to grow it.
